The "C" word

I have been trying really hard not to mention the "c" word here on Highlights to Housework, but I think it is close enough now to safely talk about Christmas without too much backlash!
I would say that most of us are rapidly filling our social calendars with parties and events involving family and friends, and with the calendar filling comes the emptying of wallets as we buy gifts. Gift buying has to be one of the most stressful parts of Christmas, but I have an idea for you! This idea would work brilliantly for workplace Kris Kringle as well as for family who already have everything! In fact some of these could be used to inject a little humour too! How about an Oxfam Unwrapped gift?? Part of the problem with gifts is that we wind up with so much "stuff" and it rarely seems to get used. Often financial considerations mean that gift giving needs to be kept to a strict budget and quality is hard to come by. This is where I think the Oxfam Unwrapped gifts are a brilliant idea. Oxfam Australia is part of a global movement of dedicated people working hard to fight poverty and injustice. Part of the appeal of these gifts is that you are helping a person or community who is really in need. The range of gifts is amazing, how about providing breakfast for Aids orphans in South Africa? or a water purifying jug for a family in Cambodia?. Do you have a family member that you don't exactly love or a humorous gift that you need to find, how about a pile of poo?! This gift helps families in Sri Lanka to grow their crops without the need for chemical fertiliser and I know I would have a good laugh if I was given this gift!

The Oxfam Unwrapped gifts give you a chance to really help out people in the world who need it and you might just make a big difference. These gifts range in price from $10 to $3000 so you are bound to find something you can afford.
Isn't Christmas meant to be about love and understanding and showing that we really care for others? This is a really great way to kill off the commercialism, to give gifts that make people smile and to make a difference to the world at this special time of year!

I love this idea. I've thought about it in the past (and I know that I wouldn't mind being given a feel-good-gift like this), but I know certain adult (yes, adult) family members I have that would be personally insulted not to receive a gift that was for them.

The irony with these family members is that they are the ones who are really well-off financially, and anything you buy them, they don't end up using. So it feels like you've wasted your money when you could be putting it to good use. I tell you, their attitudes perplex me.

Juanita, I say that this situation is the perfect one for a pile of poo! Good luck with the christmas season

Hehe a pile of poo, that's great. Although I also have family members who would think it was a crappy present. Sorry, very lame, but I couldn't resist
